Code Snippet

A typical SELECT statement will include WHERE, ORDER BY, and LIMIT keywords to retrieve only the rows that apply.

SELECT

The following selects all rows and columns from the Customers table.

					SELECT * FROM Customers;

The following selects all rows, but only the first_name and last_name columns from the Customers table.

					SELECT first_name, last_name FROM Customers;

WHERE

The following selects all rows and columns from the Customers table where the country is USA OR Canada.

					SELECT * FROM Customers
WHERE country = 'USA' OR country = 'Canada';

ORDER BY

The following selects all rows, but only the first_name and last_name columns from the Customers table where the country is USA or Canada, and sorts them alphabetically from A to Z.

DESC would sort them from Z to A.

					SELECT first_name, last_name FROM Customers
WHERE country = 'USA' OR country = 'Canada'
ORDER BY last_name ASC;

LIMIT

The following selects all rows, but only the first_name and last_name columns from the Customers table where the country is USA or Canada, and sorts them alphabetically from A to Z.

And it limits the number of rows it will retrieve to 10.

					SELECT first_name, last_name FROM Customers
WHERE country = 'USA' OR country = 'Canada'
ORDER BY last_name ASC
LIMIT 10;

We’d like to acknowledge that we learned a great deal of our coding from W3Schools and TutorialsPoint, borrowing heavily from their teaching process and excellent code examples. We highly recommend both sites to deepen your experience, and further your coding journey. We’re just hitting the basics here at 1SMARTchicken.
