Quick Reference

The Element closest() method searches up the DOM tree (the element and then its ancestors) for elements which matches a specified CSS selector.

  	<div class="element container">Parent
    	<div id="my_element" class="element">Target Element</div>
  	</div>
</div>

					// variables
let my_target = document.getElementById('my_element');
let my_closest = my_target.closest('.container');

// output to the HTML element
document.getElementById('my_output').innerHTML = my_closest;

Output

					// the parent div is selected
[object HTMLDivElement]

Syntax

					element.closest(selectors)

We’d like to acknowledge that we learned a great deal of our coding from W3Schools and TutorialsPoint, borrowing heavily from their teaching process and excellent code examples. We highly recommend both sites to deepen your experience, and further your coding journey. We’re just hitting the basics here at 1SMARTchicken.
