HTML pre
tags are used to format text just as it is written, whitespace and all. However, you may want to allow long lines of text/code to wrap.
The following CSS, when applied to your pre
tags will allow for lines to be wrapped when extending beyond the width of the containing element.
pre {
overflow-x: auto;
white-space: pre-wrap;
white-space: -moz-pre-wrap;
white-space: -pre-wrap;
white-space: -o-pre-wrap;
word-wrap: break-word;
}
Example
The following is some text within a pre
tag. Note that when the container is not long enough, the lines will wrap.
This is an example of some really long code that we want to show as written; however, if it needs to wrap it will wrap.
Note that whitespace
is
still
respected as we wrote it.
We’d like to acknowledge that we learned a great deal of our coding from W3Schools and TutorialsPoint, borrowing heavily from their teaching process and excellent code examples. We highly recommend both sites to deepen your experience, and further your coding journey. We’re just hitting the basics here at 1SMARTchicken.
