Quick Reference

The not() method returns elements that do NOT match a certain criteria. Elements that DO match are removed.

				
					$('p').not()
				
			
				
					// finds paragraphs that do NOT have a class of .third and applies CSS
$('p').not('.third').css('color', 'red');
				
			

Syntax

				
					$(selector).not(criteria,function(index))
				
			

Parameters

ParameterDescription
criteriaA selector expression, element or jQuery object indicating what to be removed from a group of selected elements (to specify multiple criteria, separate them with commas) (optional)
function(index) Specifies a function to run for each element in a group; if it returns true, the element is removed; otherwise, the element is kept ("this" is the current DOM element) (optional)

  • index - The index position of the element in the set
